A Loft ( aka: loft apartment, loft condo ) is a living space, usually in a renovated industrial building. Lofts can also be built intentionally. A loft is usually one multi-use room, with high ceilings, and with some of the original brick or other building material exposed.
In many places lofts are part of an urban renewal plan to use outdated industrial buildings for residences and retail space. The lower floors are generally retail while the lofts are on the second floor and above.
Originally popular with artists, lofts have acquired a reputation as an upscale residence. Luxurious loft apartments cater to an upper class with better financial status, hence the term "loft envy". Major cities like New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco have famous loft districts, but today lofts can be found in many mid sized cities across the US. Today lofts are built intentionally as part of large new developments, right along side condos and apartments.
The upscale reputation, and the easy adaptability to urban renewal projects will help keep lofts in the plans of developers for many years to come!
